The Farm Boy

Quotes from the Gloom:

  • “Those Utah farm boys most really be something!”

Yes, today’s main event was a modified version of a workout I experienced out in Utah. To explain more, let’s move on to…

The Thang

  • Lunge Walk from COT over to curb, where cinder blocks just happen to be waiting for us, two per parking spot.
  • Warmup
    • Side Straddle Hop x20 IC
    • Potato Pickers x15 IC
    • Low Slow Squat x15g IC
    • Arm Circles-forward x20 IC
    • Arm Circles-backward x20 IC
    • Seal Claps x20 IC
    • Overhead Seal Claps x20 IC
    • Moroccan Night Clubs x20 IC
    • Now that the shoulders are sufficiently “warm” and the sweatshirts are starting to come off…
  • Rifle Carry cinder block from one end of the parking lot to the other and back.
  • Merkins x10 IC
  • Mountain Climbers x20 IC
  • The Perp Walk.
    • Hands on head the whole time.
    • No Surrender x10 at starting curb, center median, and far curb.
    • Convict Walking Lunges in between stops.
    • End with Freddie Mercuries until all Pax have made it to the far curb.
    • So, basically, hands are behind the head the entire length of the parking lot while doing the various exercises and waiting for last Pax to finish.
    • Once across the parking lot, we had to get back, so we did so via…
  • The Cross Walk.
    • Same as The Perp Walk, but with arms spread wide like a cross the entire time rather than behind the head. Make your way from far curb back to starting curb via Cross Walking Lunges (arms spread wide), doing 10 Take Me Now at each curb and in the center median, for a total of 30 Take Me Now in between the Cross Walking Lunges.
    • Take Me Now is basically the same as No Surrender, but with arms spread wide.
    • Cross Walking Lunges in between stops
    • End with Freddie Mercuries until all Pax have made it across the field.
    • So, basically, arms are spread wide the entire length of the parking lot while doing the various exercises and waiting for last Pax to finish.
  • Now on to the main event… Last Summer, I was out West visiting family and got to post with the pax of Salt Lake City for a couple of months. The last Friday I was there, the QIC wasn’t able to make it, so another pax stepped up to lead us that day. There were four of us, some cinderblocks, and a long field that was half grass and half gravel. So, the substi-Q for the day (viz., Stimpy) created what came to be known as “The Farmer Boy Relay” because it involved a lot of farmer carries with the cinder blocks. Shout out to Kingpin and Thighmaster, as well (pic below of the SLC crew)!
  • The next sequence of exercises was a variation of what we did that day. It can be done either in partners or individually. This morning we opted for individually, as Zin was partially MASH-ing it.
  • The gist of this morning’s Farm Boy was to do the following sequence of exercise a lot:
    • (1) Farmer Carry: Two cinder blocks, one in each hand, across the parking lot, touch the far curb, and walk all the way back.
    • (2) Another cinder block exercise.
    • (3) An ab exercise.
  • We repeated this sequence about seven times doing the following cinder block exercises after each Farmer Carry (about 15 reps of each):
    • Squat
    • Curls
    • Thrusters
    • Overhead Press
    • Cinder Block Swing
    • Chest Press
    • Goblet Squat
  • We also did the following ab exercises after each cinder block exercise (about 20 reps I/C of each):
    • Hallelujah Toy Soldiers
    • Heels to Heaven
    • Big Boy Sit Ups
    • Hello Dolly (or Lowlita)
    • LBC’s
    • Protractor
    • Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes
  • We then had just enough time to finish off with a Jack Webb (1 Merkin / 4 Air Presses, going up). We got up to round five or six before time expired.

Moleskine (i.e., Spreadsheets from the Gloom)

I was expecting a few more pax this morning, but I think the 20-degree weather at a “no running” workout scared some people away. We definitely kept active and warm, though, even without running. It was great seeing Bratwurst, Two Hand Touch, and Zinfandel out there pushing it on a chilly morning. Thanks to Two Hand Touch and Turnbuckle for asking me to Q at Diesel!
