Cliff notes: Tuck and Hazmat took an early recon run to check the state of bridges and ice on trails. Their report: tricky, but doable. That’s all we needed to hear. We abandoned the plan of going hybrid and decided to turn full idiot one more weekend.
No regrets: the suspension bridge was an ice rink; the wooden passages and road bridges were slightly tricky (HOAs down south don’t know about brining, apparently). The rest of the trail offered that satisfying feeling when your boot crushes a thin layer of ice.
Some of us may have landed on our rear end on occasion, some others may have had to climb a short hill on all fours. But oh, we had so much fun doing so.
In the end, it was anywhere from 7 to 15 miles. Special kudos to Hazmat for arriving at COT with a smile, one layer and no hat on, while the rest were sporting heavy clothing.
