One thing to take away from my trip, though, was how Germany, Austria, Hungary and other European nations are grappling with the recent past through stolperstein — stumbling blocks. They are commemoration stones to remember those abducted and sent to Nazi concentration camps. We all fail at times — some ways are obviously much bigger than others — but didn’t brush it under the rug, admit it, learn, try to make restoration, and do better.
