Last night I watched the Netflix documentary about the Oklahoma City bombing. Only a few people who were buried in the rubble were pulled out alive. One of the storylines was about a woman who did survive. They got all the way to her & grabbed her hand. Right at that moment, authorities thought they found another unexploded bomb. They immediately cleared the area for several city blocks. Which meant they had to leave her there, still buried, but so close to being rescued. They eventually got back to her & pulled her out. But in the between time, she looked back on her life, thinking she was going to die before they could come back. She was not happy with how she had lived to that point. She vowed that if she made it out, she would no longer live her life the same way.
And she didn’t. She became the CEO of the credit union she was working for at the time of the explosion. She became a mom. She lost a ton of weight & now does triathlons. She kept her vow.
I hope none of us need to have such a tragic event happen to cause us to change. But if you need to, take a few minutes now to imagine yourself buried alive at the bottom of a debris field. If help doesn’t arrive, are you good with where you are now; with what you’ve done? If help does come, what do you do differently afterwards? Why are you waiting for a collapse? You could change tomorrow. Or even the next hour; the next minute.
