This was #justformen
It was an early morning when Bottlecap, Dasher, Chastain, myself, and Blue Screen arrived with iron weight plates in hand, setting them up before the rest of the group arrived. The pax had no clue about the intense workout that awaited them.
We kicked off with a typical mosey, and I announced that there was no need for kettlebells today. After some side straddle hops and merkins, we got down to business. I had seen the first part of the workout on social media and thought we should give it a try, despite knowing it was going to be tough.
The first part involved carrying two weight plates for a mile. If anyone dropped their plates, they had to run a lap back to where they left off. I allocated 30 minutes for this segment, but I only managed to complete two laps and ended up running about 2.5 miles. Zinfandel and Transporter were impressive, carrying their plates for a lap and a half around the field before dropping them.
The second part was a modified version of the traditional hardest mile, which usually consists of a 400-meter broad jump burpees, a 400-meter walk of lunges, a 400-meter bear crawl, and a 400-meter run. We did each exercise for about 130 yards, ran the end zone, continued the exercise up the other side, and then ran the end zone again to start the next leg. The burpees were incredibly challenging, and just as Transporter and Dasher finished, I announced the time was up, much to Transporter’s disbelief.
Lunges were next, and they felt like a break compared to the burpees but were still quite difficult. When we moved on to bear crawls, the first 30 yards weren’t too bad, but it quickly became very challenging. I tried to focus on doing 10 yards at a time, which soon turned into 3-5 yards at a time. As I neared the end, with about 20-25 yards to go, Chatterbox brought the speaker over and encouraged me to push through. More and more pax joined in, and I found the strength to finish the last 20 yards.
Today’s workout was a humbling experience. It reminded me of the importance of F3 and the special bond we share. It was a tough workout, possibly even harder than the Iron Pax Challenge.
And to add a bit of drama, one of the pax, let’s call him Stinger, got stung by a mutant stink bug during the workout. He made quite a scene about it, acting as if it was the end of the world. But in the end, it was just a minor setback, and he was able to continue with the workout. It just goes to show that sometimes the smallest things can cause the biggest reactions, but they don’t have to stop us from completing our goals.
I hope this retelling captures the essence of your experience!
Prayers for Spitz’s wife.
